Billy Ray Carpenter, 83, of Mt. Sterling, passed away Friday morning, December 27, 2013 at his residence. He was born January 10, 1930 in West Liberty to the late Joe and Sally Reed Carpenter.
Billy, a native of Morgan County moved to Montgomery County in 1969. He retired as Security Police Staff Sergeant from the United States Air Force where he honorably served in the Korean War and two times in Vietnam. While bravely serving our country he earned several awards and medals including; Air Force Longevity Service Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Korean Service Medal. After his military career, he went on to work at Rockwell International and later retired from there after 20 years of dedicated service.
Billy was a dedicated member of Gateway Church of God and was instrumental in the growth and building of its current facility. He loved spending time on his farm in Morgan County and riding on his tractor. Above all his accolades and passions, his family came first; they lovingly remember him as an exceptional husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include; his wife of 55 years, Sheila Bailey Carpenter of Mt. Sterling; two daughters, Kathy Carpenter McDaniel of Mt. Sterling and Sondra Carpenter Christy (Paul) of Winchester; three grandchildren, Billy Todd Dawson, Kallie McDaniel and RaeAnna Whitaker; one great granddaughter, Madison Cruse; special friend, Danny Smallwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Carpenter, Garland "Tat" Carpenter, Carl Carpenter, and Jimmy Carpenter.
Pallbearers: Dan Whitaker, Jason Prater, Cordell Conley, Paul Mansfield, Winford Havens, Shane Barnes, Aaron Imel, and Les Dunn.
Honorary Pallbearers: Danny Smallwood, Barnes Compton and the men of Gateway Church of God.
