Carol Napier Waller, whose cheerfulness, kindness, charm and wit endeared her to her family and a wide circle of friends, died Dec. 24, 2012, in Mount Sterling, Ky. She was 80.
A Richmond native, Mrs. Waller had keen interests in travel, theater, art, music, reading, gardening and cooking. Her favorite place to visit was New York. Her favorite trip abroad was to London. She thoroughly enjoyed going to the seashore, especially Virginia Beach. As a retirement present to herself, she took a two-week trip to Hawaii.
For many years, Mrs. Waller had season tickets to the plays at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Mrs. Waller was born May 14, 1932, in Richmond, where she lived the great majority of her life. She was a daughter of Stuart A. Napier Sr. and Virginia Taylor Napier.
She attended Patrick Henry Elementary School, Bainbridge Junior High School and one year at John Marshall High School, all in Richmond. Then, for a few years, she and her family moved to Hampton, Va., where she graduated from Hampton High School in 1949. While at Hampton High, she belonged to Delta Delta Kappa sorority. She continued her education at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.
Until the move to Hampton, she and her parents lived in Richmond with her maternal grandparents, George H. Taylor and Bessie Morris Taylor. This provided her a loving, multigenerational home during the Depression and World War II.
She grew up in and was baptized at Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Richmond.
Before her 1953 marriage to Frank W. Waller Jr., who died in 1977, she worked at C&P Telephone Co. in Richmond. Then she spent 20 years as a homemaker, raising three children. In 1973, she began a 23-year food service career in the Henrico County public school system.
Mrs. Waller was a charter member of Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond. For several years, she was a teacher at Derbyshire's Vacation Bible School. At different times, she worked in Derbyshire's nursery and library and helped prepare meals for Family Night suppers on Wednesdays.
