Donny Johnson Toy

July 20, 1937 — January 11, 2021

Donny Johnson Toy, age 83, died at home in Sharpsburg, KY on January 11th, 2021 with his loving family by his side and in the care of his hospice team.

Donny was born in Mt. Sterling, KY on July 20th, 1937.  He is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Sandra Toy; two brothers Ronnie Dunnigan (Becky) of Lexington, KY and Rudy Dunnigan (Charlotte) of Georgetown, KY; one sister Bonnie Harmon (Ewell) of Louisville, KY;  five children Doug Toy (Pam) of Owingsville, KY, Barry Toy (Jill) of Owingsville, KY, Malinda Munday (Robin) of Mt. Sterling, KY, Fran Toy (Johanna) of Lexington, KY, and Shawna Toy of Nashville, TN. In addition to his children, Donny is survived by 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  Donny was preceded by his parents Harrison Toy and Sara Staton Lovejoy.

Donny attended Owingsville High School in Owingsville, KY.  After graduating, Donny worked as an Engineering Materials Specialist at The Kentucky Department of Transportation in Flemingsburg, KY for 32 years, retiring in 1993.  Donny is a member of Sharpsburg Christian Church where he and his family attended for many years.

Donny Johnson Toy was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the NY Yankees and Boys and Girls Kentucky High School Basketball.  Traveling and spending time with family was another love of Donny’s as he and his family made an annual trip to Aruba.  Donny also made an annual trip to the Kentucky State High School Boys Basketball Tournament and held an impressive record of attending for 55 years in a row.

Donny adored his family and the memories they made through the years in Aruba, dining with friends at his favorite restaurant, Merrick Inn, or simply watching Kentucky High School basketball games. Donny will always be remembered by those that he touched and will always be known as the familiar face in the Kentucky High School Basketball Arena.

A special thanks goes to St. Claire Hospice with an additional thank you to Rosie McDonald and Helen Bowles that took tremendous care of Donny at his home during this difficult time.

Private family memorial service will be Friday, January 15, 2021 at the Sharpsburg Christian Church at 1:00PM.  Interment will follow at the Crown Cemetery across the street from Sharpsburg Christian Church and will be open to the public.  All social distancing rules will apply, and the family asks that all people in attendance wear a mask.
