Edward Hawkins Drennen, 77, husband of Carolyn Story Drennen, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2013. Born in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, on June 28, 1935, he was the son of the late James Francis and Lillian Belle Greenwade Drennen.
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he served as lector and usher and formerly served on the Parish Council.
Ed retired from the US Postal Service in 2007 after 36 years of service as a Rural Letter Carrier. He was very active as a member of the Kentucky Rural Letter Carriers Association as well as the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was actively serving as Vice President of his District. Ed was honored as Kentucky Outstanding Rural Carrier Member of the Year in 2005. He was also recognized as Outstanding Secretary and Treasurer of his Rural Carrier District. Ed also received a special achievement award for exceptional service from the Mt. Sterling Post Office.
Ed loved farming and served on the Montgomery County Soil Conservation board for 37 years, seven as president. He was a member of the local Farm Bureau Young Farmers and served as an election officer for 14 years.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carolyn and their five children, Cathy Watkins, Bill Drennen (Charlene), Jamie Weaver (Jay), Susan Howard (Perry "Doe"), and Dee Dee Johnson (Allen); eight grandchildren, Wesley Howard, Erin Miles (Robbie), Joey Weaver, Elyse Howard, Austin Johnson, Mallory Weaver, Ethan Johnson, and Ashley Whitt; two great-grandchildren, Mollie Catherine and Meredith Clay Miles; a brother, James Francis "Rabbit" Drennen (Brenda); three sisters, Annabelle Dorsey (Richard), Phyllis Phillips (Ken), and Beverly Miller; one brother-in-law, Herb White; one-sister-in-law, Mittie Wigginton.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary White and one brother-in-law, Ray Wigginton.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Howard, Austin Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Joey Weaver, Roman Fawns, and Jake Fawns. Honorary pallbearers will be special friends David Darrell, Bob Webb, Bobby Goodrich, Vernon "Roastin" Dunn, Ronald "Hoppy" Haddix, Dave "Killer" Gilvin, Raymond "Butch" Lee, members of the Kentucky Rural Letter Carriers Association, and current and former employees of the Mt. Sterling Post Office.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick Church Foundation Fund, 139 West Main Street, Mt. Sterling, KY 40353.
