John Jacob Phillip Mayer Jr., 82 years, a resident of Frenchburg, died Saturday, March 25th. at Windsor Care Nursing Home, Mt. Sterling, Ky. He was a Retired Educator, Veteran and Community Leader. Husband of Gwendolyn R. Buckler-Mayer and father of five children (four served in the Air Force and one a Para-Medic).
He was born Nov. 10, 1934 in Ambridge, PA. To the late John Andrew and Sophie Marie (Duma-Duncan) Mayer. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was an educator in the Menifee, Nicholas, Woodford, Morgan, Wolfe and Greenup County school districts also taught in the Miami, FL schools. He received his BA from Eastern Kentucky University, MA from the University of Kentucky and his Rank I from Morehead State University. He was a music director in all the school districts and served as Principle of Menifee County Elementary and also as girls’ basketball coach and a member of the Menifee County Retired Teachers Association. He was a county employee as the Senior Citizen Van Driver. He was a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, choir director and a member of the Frenchburg Baptist Church. He was a community leader serving as a Gideon and past Kentucky Lions State Secretary, a Past Lions Club District 43Y Governor, a past Mt. Sterling Kiwanian board member, charter member of Omicron Alpha Kappa and a Kentucky Colonel. He was honored by the Frenchburg/Menifee County Chamber of Commerce with the Citizen of the Year Award; Served as a Volunteer with the Great Leaps Reading Program; received the Asa Hale Award along with many other honors.
He is survived by his Wife of 63 years Gwendolyn R. Buckler-Mayer, five (5) children; John Phillip (Laurie) Mayer of Ocean Springs, MS.; Jeffrey Patrick (Marina) Mayer of Navarre, FL.; Wendy R. (Thomas) Von Seggern of Wamego, KS; Crystal M. Daugherty of Lexington, KY.; William A. Mayer of Georgetown, KY.; Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother: James (Betty) Mayer of South Point, North Carolina. Three sister in law: Gladys Edwards of Williamstown, Ky.; Evelyn Rolph of Ohio; Violet Stone of Berry, Ky.; three brother in law: Raymond (Kay) Buckler of Ohio; Donald (Wilma) of Taylor Mills, Ky.; Everett (Gloria) Buckler of Berry, Ky. And host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, they family would like donations towards the Menifee County Retired Teacher's Scholarship Fund, PO Box 48, Frenchburg, Kentucky 40322.
Services are scheduled for family only at Coffman Funeral Home & Crematory. You are invited to come and celebrate with Family and Friends with a Memorial Celebration to be held at the Frenchburg Baptist Church, Friday at 2:00PM. Pastor Danny Ingram, Pastor David Hale and Pastor Lovell Stevens will be officiating.
