Vernon Reinhold Schmidt, 88, of Mt. Sterling died Monday, July 27, 2020 at his residence. He was born in Tigerton, Wisconsin on November 23, 1931 to the late Reinhold and Elsie Volmer Schmidt.
Vernon moved to the Mt. Sterling area in 1978 and was a member of First United Methodist Church. As an United States Army Combat Veteran he fought in the infamous Battle of Pork Chop Hill during the Korean War. He was a talented mechanic who could fix most everything and worked in construction as a project manager after his military career.
Vernon enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to flea markets, yard sales and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he adored. In recent months he was looking forward to becoming a great grandfather. Vernon's friends and family will miss him dearly.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Christine Schmidt of Mt. Sterling; two sons, Faron Schmidt of Mt. Sterling and Mike Schmidt (Judy) of Salem, Wisconsin; one daughter, Karen Miko of Mt. Sterling and five grandchildren, Lauren Miko of Lexington, South Carolina, Tyler Cornett of Bellview, Gwen Schmidt of Racine, Wisconsin, Jason Schmidt of Caledonia, Wisconsin and Rachael Schmidt of Racine, Wisconsin.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Leah Schmidt.
Graveside service will be held Monday, August 3, 2020 at 11:00AM at Machpelah Cemetery. Pastor Eric Patterson will be officiating.
