William Delbert Reed, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at St. Joseph hospital, Lexington, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his faithful wife of fifty years, Vonda Reed (Mt. Sterling), his sister, Deloris White (Winchester); daughter, Kim Kirby (Todd) of Mt. Sterling; daughter, Amy Givens (Josh) of Lebanon, Ohio; daughter, Lori Wells (Tim) of Lawrenceburg; and son, Jonathan Reed (Courtney) of Mt. Sterling. His grandchildren are Maddie, Sarah and Miriam Kirby; Riley and Avery Givens; Abigail, Molly Kate and Josiah Wells; and Carson, Isaiah and Hudson Reed.
Bill was born in Paintsville, Kentucky in 1950 to Kittie and Delbert Reed, then moved to Mt. Sterling at a young age, growing up with his sister, Deloris. He graduated from Morehead State University, but most importantly, met his sweet little wife there. Bill and Vonda were married on June 22, 1974. They welcomed their first child, Kimberly in July of 1975. Bill began working at IBM and not long after, another baby girl came into their hearts, Amy in January of 1978. A few years passed and Lori was born in May of 1981 and finally, a baby boy Jonathan arrived in August of 1985.
As they became parents, they realized the importance of raising their children to love the Lord. They began attending Camargo Church of God, where Bill taught Sunday School classes, served on the Board of Trustees, and watched his children give their lives to Christ. He and Vonda have been active members of the church there for many years.
Bill worked as an assemblyman specialist for Lexmark International, Inc. before retiring in 2013. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and reading, but most of all, he loved having his family around him. Whether a beach vacation, birthday celebration or holiday fun, his favorite times were with his family.
The last few years were more of a struggle for Bill as he battled Parkinson’s disease. However, he knew he was never alone in that fight. Vonda was his caregiver, his family was there by his side, his church family made sure he could get in and out of church every Sunday – but most importantly, God was ever-present. Though his physical body was declining, he continued to cling to the truth of God’s word that he read every morning with Vonda. He relied on prayer to bring him hope and comfort, offering to pray for those around him or asking others to pray for him. He knew where his help came from; it came from the Lord, which is why the verse in 2 Timothy 4: 7-8 can be said of Bill. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing”.
